Predictors of Rumination Reflection and Brooding: The Self-Determination Theory Perspective

Past research has shown that rumination is a multifaced construct and two types of were distinguished, reflection (adaptive contemplation) brooding (pessimistic thinking style). Although they are related, considered different constructs. Self-determination theory proposes there three basic psychological needs, namely autonomy, competence, relatedness, which essential for human functioning well-being. The frustration these needs can create discrepancy between actual ideal states goal attainment (satisfaction the competence), initiate about unattained goals. Grounded on self-determination theory, present study aimed to examine link need satisfaction dimensions with cross-sectional design. data collected during Pandemic. Undergraduate university students (N = 464, female 69%, Mage 21.90, SD 2.88) from departments major state in Turkey participated current study. Ruminative Response Scale-Short Form Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction Frustration Scale administered via an online survey tool. Results showed while dimension was predicted by competence need, relatedness frustration. explained unique variance reflection. adaptive, results it might be maladaptive coping strategy under highly controlling uncertain environment. findings suggest supporting critical importance decreasing rumination.
